Betty J. Smith

SMITH, Betty J., age 88 of Vandalia passed away Thursday, December 18, 2014 at Brookdale Place of Englewood. She was born June 11, 1926 in Grayson County, KY, daughter of the late Joseph & Grace Stephens. Betty was a member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vandalia, retired from Lazarus and then spent many years working for Meijer of Englewood and Troy, as well as Sam's Club. Preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Smith Jr. in 1999 and numerous brothers & sisters, Betty is survived by her children, Stephen M. Smith (Shirley), Christopher B. Smith (Mary) and Gloria Tappe (Bernard); 4 grandchildren, Dustin, Stacey, Kimberly and Christopher and 6 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, December 23 at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia with Pastor Gil Santiago officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1:00 pm until time of service. If so desired, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in Betty's memory.
