Betty Somers

SOMERS, Betty V. passed away, Thursday, May 29, 2008 at the age of 101. She was born January 24, 1907 to William & Sarah DeHaven. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Somers in 1975; 5 brothers, 5 sisters, son-in-law, Charles Butterworth & her grandson, Jeffrey Butterworth. Betty is survived by her daughters, Janet Butterworth of Vandalia and C. June Irons & husband, Col. James V. Irons of VA; grandchildren, Jane Wessel of VA, Constance Richert & husband, Allyn of VA, Melanie Irons of VA & John Irons of SC; 7 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Betty worked in the retail industry for 25 years, attended Miami-Jacobs College, and eventually retired from the Kettering City School system where she worked as a secretary. She was a longtime member of David's United Church of Christ, she was a member of the Belmont Chapter of the Eastern Star, a 50-year member of the Dayton Soroptimist, and was a member of the Dayton Woman's Club, the Business Women's Club of Dayton and P.E.O. Chapter DS. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, June 3 at David's United Church of Christ, 170 West David Rd. Kettering, with Rev. Virginia Duffy officiating. Burial to follow at David's Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 1:00 pm until time of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in Betty's memory.
