Carl E. Dean passed away at the age of 86 years on Monday, December 10, 2018. Carl is survived by his wife, Marianna, of 61 years. Together they raised four children: Mike (Sue, deceased), David (Sheila), Beth (Dave, deceased) Fjelstul and Carrie (Rick) Williams. A loving Grandfather to 9 Grandkids: Stephanie (deceased), Sarah, Marie, Sam, Elaine, Grace, Erin, Gus and Beck. Carl was born to Carlos and Alice (Query) Dean in Cawood, KY on January 9, 1932. He is survived by siblings Betty and Sue. Preceded in death by siblings Connie, John, Mary and James.
Carl graduated from Roosevelt High School Class of 1948 in Dayton, OH. After studying at Ohio State University, Carl proudly served his country as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army during the Korean War. Upon return, Carl met his bride, Marianna, and they married on December 7, 1957. He was a career businessman beginning at Buckeye Iron and Brass, then started his own business, Buckeye Oil Equipment. Carl retired, but never fully, in 1997. His love of family, church and commitment to serving his community were important aspects of his life. Carl made it a priority to be present at his kids’ and grandkids’ activities. He was a member of Vandalia City Council, President and Treasurer of Petroleum Equipment Institute, and served on the Board of Vandalia United Methodist Church.
Carl will best be known as a man of principle who had his priorities in order. Celebration of Life to be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018, 11:00 am at Vandalia United Methodist Church. Interment with military honors will follow at Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, OH. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Honor Flight Dayton, Inc., 200 Canary Ct., Enon, OH 45323. Arrangements entrusted to Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia.
