Carlton Shank

February 17, 1938 — March 24, 2019

Carlton Allan Shank, 81 of Vandalia, Ohio passed away in his home Sunday afternoon, March 24, 2019. He died peacefully in the company of his loving family. Preceded in death by his parents Dr. Carlton H. Shank & Wilma R. Shank. Survived by his wife, Roberta L. Shank, of nearly 60 years, his children Shari Young (Charlie) and Kevin Shank (Melissa), his grandchildren: Lauren Rinehart, Elizabeth Weeks, Raina Shank, Kainan Shank, and Roman Shank.

Carlton was born February 17, 1938, in Lancaster, Ohio. He attended Ohio State University where he met the love of his life and married at the age of 19. In 1961, Carlton graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education as well as earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He taught chemistry at Vandalia-Butler High School for 27 years until his retirement in 1988 at the age of 50. He loved teaching and believed, "You can quit the job of teaching but the mindset stays with you." He missed not being able to share tidbits of information with his students. His classes were fun, interactive, and informative; students came back years after graduating just to tell him how far ahead they were in college chemistry because of him.

Carlton was also an avid hobbyist. He collected trains and built a model railroad that filled his ranch home basement. He was equally invested in model airplanes, and in 1972, self-published a book: "Collectors' Guide to Model Aircraft and Rocket/Missile/Space Kits" which was known as "Shank's Guide" and utilized by serious hobbyists to find models that weren't listed anywhere else.

The family will hold a private gathering to celebrate Carlton's life. Memorial donations can be made in his honor to Ohio's Hospice of Dayton or Parkinson's Foundation, Ohio Chapter.
