Carolyn L. Patterson

January 27, 1935 — June 18, 2017

Carolyn (Mamaw) Patterson, age 82, of Vandalia Ohio passed away peacefully at home on June 18, 2017. She was born in Dayton, Ohio on January 27, 1935. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents Clara T. Thornsburg and Joseph H. Bertholf; husband, Herbert E. Patterson, sisters, Juanita Horner and Elizabeth Ayers, and brother, George Pappas.

Carolyn is survived by daughters, Scherrie L. Scott of Tipp City, Becky Skaggs of Troy, and Betty J. Patterson (Chris) of Huber Heights, and sons Herbert E. Patterson (Fawnda) of Vandalia and Russell E. Patterson of Vandalia; grandchildren Nicole Humbert (Dustin), Jessie Scott (Dave), Cory Scott, Kelly Morrow (Brandon), Ryan Scott, Hayley Patterson, and Daniel Patterson. Great-grandchildren Cora Grant, Wyatt Humbert, Macie Root, and Brody Morrow. She is also survived by loving brother Joseph H Bertholf and lifelong friend, Norma Bertholf; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carolyn attended the Northridge school system growing up. After marrying the love of her life, Herb, they resided in Vandalia. Carolyn worked at places such as McCroy’s Five and Dime, Inland, and in the cafeterias of the Vandalia school system. No job, however, gave Carolyn more joy than being a caregiver for her family.

Carolyn’s home had an open door policy and everyone was welcomed and accepted. To know Carolyn was to love her. She had such a capacity for unconditional love that every child who knew her referred to her affectionately as Mamaw. Carolyn regularly attended the Northridge Nazarene Church where she considered everyone her extended family. Ladies of the church became like sisters in her eyes. Her Pastor Christian Williams and his family held a special place in her heart. Carolyn’s ability to love and forgive people easily was her greatest. She had the ability to make everyone feel loved and appreciated. She was loved by everyone she knew and will be missed more than words can express.

Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Sunday, July 2, 2017 at the Northridge Nazarene Church in Dayton, Ohio.
