HENGER, Charles A. (Charley), age 80, of Vandalia, passed away unexpectedly Friday, August 19, 2005 at his residence. Charley was born June 16, 1925 in Murlin Heights, OH, son of the late Harry & Eleanor (Koppin) Henger. He was a graduate of Vandalia-Butler High School Class of 1943. Charley was the Owner of Hengers Market IGA. He was involved in numerous community activities including his membership at the Vandalia United Methodist Church, the Vandalia Butler Chamber of Commerce, former member of the Vandalia Rotary Club, and the Vandalia-Butler Foundation. Charley was the recipient of the Vandalia Distinguished Citizen Award and received a Key to the City on two occasions. The City and its residents will forever appreciate Charleys unselfish dedication and service to his community. Charley was a US Air Force Veteran of WW II and a member of VFW Post #9582. He was a member of the Antioch Shrine, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton (33rd Degree), Vandalia Masonic Lodge #742 F&AM and the O.E.S. Victory Chapter. He was also the recipient of numerous civic awards. Preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers, Harry, Norman & Bob and 3 sisters, Mary, Ruthie & Kathryn Louise, Charley is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gloria A. (Hein) Henger of Vandalia; 1 daughter, Leigh & husband, Brad Hafer of Vandalia; 2 sons, Steve Henger of Vandalia and Jim Henger of Ft. Collins, CO; 1 sister-in-law, Eleanor Henger of Evansville, IN; 6 grandchildren, Matthew and Jessika Henger, Amy and Dave Mack, Brian & Julie Henger, Carinne Henger, Tyler Henger, & Charley Hafer; 4 great-grandchildren, Conner, Alaina, Ryan & Ethan and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, August 22 at the Vandalia United Methodist Church, 200 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia with Rev. Thomas Weeks officiating. Burial to follow at Poplar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Vandalia United Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon from 2-6 pm with Masonic services to be held at 6:00pm. If so desired, contributions may be made to the Vandalia-Butler Foundation P.O. Box 90282 Dayton, OH 45490 where a fund has been established in Charleys memory.
