Donald Edward Coffey (93), loving husband and devoted father, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, January 3, 2016 with his family by his side. Residing at Grace Brethren Village in Englewood, Ohio, Don and his wife Betsy were longtime residents of Vandalia, Ohio. Born in 1922 and raised in Urbana, Ohio, Don served in World War II as a Merchant Marine on Liberty Ships throughout the South Pacific. Prior to World War II Don attended the Ohio State University studying Mechanical Engineering.
Don began working for the National Cash Register Company in 1945 and during his 35 years with NCR received several patents, one for the Till Tray Replaceable Currency or Bill Holder for cash registers and Automatic Teller Machines (ATM). Don was an active member and past president of the Vandalia Band Boosters and a member of the Vandalia Lions Club where he
did extensive volunteer work for the Vandalia Food Pantry.
Don leaves behind his wife of 68 years, Betsy; daughters Laurie Lafferty, Amy Battoclette, Nancy Coffey, and Beth Green; 8 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter Cynthia Roof, sister Jeanne Caton, and brothers William and Richard. Visitation will be at the Vandalia Methodist Church, 200 S. Dixie Dr. on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 11:00 AM followed by a service at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Vandalia Food Pantry, PO Box 141, Vandalia, OH 45377 or Grace Brethren Village, 1010 Taywood Rd., Englewood, OH 45322. Arrangements entrusted to Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia.
