Donald C. Kunz

October 27, 1928 — January 27, 2019

Donald Charles Kunz, age 90, passed away Sunday, January 27, 2019. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Patricia, and son Gregory, as well as his parents, Earl and Thelma Kunz, and his brother, Richard. He is survived by his children Rebecca Cook (Greg), Donald Lee Kunz, and Charlene Molnar (Steve); his grandchildren Jennifer Pond (Brian), Laurie Cyrus (Kevin), Rachelle Belcastro (Marc II), and Aaron Cook (Nicole) along with great grandchildren Riley, Savannah, Landon, Lux, Violet, Annabelle, Jones and Logan.

Born on October 27, 1928 he grew up in Butler Township and lived his entire life in this area. He opened his own lawn and garden business in 1966, called Power Turf Equipment Company, and it is still open today.

Though he seemed like a reserved man, he loved his friends and family dearly. He always had a cheesy joke ready to tell, and you couldn’t help but laugh.

He was an avid fisherman throughout his entire life. He could fix anything, and actually built the first family home from the ground up. He was a skilled craftsman, and we all reaped the benefits of one of his many hobbies of basket-weaving, which we lovingly named “Kunz-enbergers”.

Family vacations were usually camping at East Harbor State Park located in Port Clinton OH. These trips produced a lot of great family memories for his children. The Kunz family could be picked out of the camping crowd since he used an Army Surplus tent that would sleep 12 people comfortably.

He loved taking his wife to Disney World, and always dreamed of working for “the Mouse” by driving one of their passenger ferry boats. You could always find him riding the monorail, and his favorite place to stay was the Polynesian.

He always had a drawer of candy at work to “sneak” to the grandchildren, and great grandchildren; this is how he was given the name of “Grandpa Candy” by his oldest great granddaughter. He also had a stash of dog treats for the fur-babies of the family.

He followed the same schedule every morning, and at a specific time he could be found at the local Bob Evans, where he made lifelong friends of the staff.

He was a life-long member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio and later in life, he became a member of the Vandalia Masonic Lodge.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Grace Brethren Village in Englewood OH for the loving care they provided during his final months.

A visitation will take place on Thursday, February 7th from 5:00pm-6:30pm, with a celebration of life immediately following at Morton Whetstone Funeral home, located at 139 South Dixie Drive, Vandalia OH 45377.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to:
