Doris Katherine Kallas

d. September 11, 2020

Huber Heights, OH

KALLAS, Doris Katherine, Age 93, of Huber Heights, OH, passed peacefully into life eternal Friday, September 11, 2020.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Edna Mae (Striker) Feichtner, her loving husband of 60 years, Nicholas and siblings, Paul (Marguerite) Feichtner, Carl Feichtner, and Martha Auck. She is survived by her devoted daughters Kimberly (Eric) Hannahan and Tina (David) Thomas; grandchildren Nathan (Leah) Hannahan, Kenneth Hannahan (Kimberly Werst), Joshua Thomas, and Holly Thomas; great granddaughters Ella and Audrey Hannahan; great-step-grandchildren, Ava, Kaden, and Kassidy Werst; brother-in-law Weldon Auck; sister-in-law Joyce Feichtner; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Doris was a gifted seamstress. As a teen, she was able to look at a dress in a catalog, make a pattern of it out of a newspaper and make the dress out of flour sacks. She worked for Vassil’s Garment Factory after graduation until traveling to Waverly, Iowa to work at the Lutheran Children’s Home. She was working at Ohio Bell as a telephone operator in Cleveland when she met Nicholas. She transferred to Ohio Bell in Dayton after they were married in 1957. Three years later she quit working to be a stay-at-home mom who loved raising her daughters. She would often be found making clothes for herself, her girls, and their dolls. She loved being a room mother as well as a Wayne High School Band Parent.

Doris loved life, had a very giving spirit, and was always helping others. She was a long-time member of Saint Timothy Lutheran Church, volunteering in many capacities through the years. She enjoyed reading to the homebound elderly, and coordinating project days at her church which included making hundreds of cardboard dolls for medical missionaries to take overseas as well as other craft projects. She also volunteered for other organizations including Lutheran Social Services and the Christian Appalachia Project.

When the girls were in their teens, Doris returned to work in retail sales for Elder Beerman, advancing to manager of the infant’s furniture department. After retiring from Elder Beerman’s downtown Dayton store, Doris worked in the gift shop at Cracker Barrel.

Doris was on her high school basketball team, loved history, watching musicals, playing dominos and gin rummy, and traveling. She went on many memorable vacations and road trips. Doris treasured her time with her family and friends. They brought her so much joy. In her latter years she enjoyed reading, word search puzzles, cardinals, root beer floats, and Sprite.

Doris was proud to be a “One in a Million” NSDAR Daughter of the American Revolution, Jonathan Dayton Chapter, Cameo Society, as well as a friend of Shiloh UCC. She had a strong faith and love of God, country, and family.

It was Doris's wish that her family and friends truly "CELEBRATE HER LIFE".  The family requests that to honor and celebrate Doris, you please wear bright, cheerful colors to her services.   Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, September 4, 2021 at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia with Rev. Lynn Labs officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 1:00 pm until time of service. https://youtu.be/J33-PPhFcws
