Doris Warner

August 6, 1925 — April 29, 2019

WARNER, Doris (Lurlene) Edmon, age 93, formerly of Vandalia, OH, died Monday, April 29, 2019, at Springhills Singing Woods of Dayton. She was born August 6, 1925, in Ashland, Kentucky, the daughter of DeWitt and Myrtle (Lewis) Edmon. Doris was the head bookkeeper for Sandy Valley Wholesale Grocers in Ashland until coming to Dayton in Spring, 1945, where she worked as a secretary at Wright Field (later WPAFB). There she met, upon his return from WWII service, Naval Aviator Arch Woodrow Warner, Jr., whom she married in 1949 on the Bride and Groom radio show in Hollywood, CA. Doris has been an active member of the Vandalia United Methodist Church since 1955, was a member of the Vandalia Lioness Club, and served as room mother extraordinaire for her two proud children.

She is survived by one daughter, Debra McCracken, of Dayton; one son, John (Gail) Warner, of Colorado Springs; and granddaughter Nicole Warner and grandson Skylar Warner, also of Colorado Springs.

Doris could often be found playing golf at Cassel Hills, shuffling pinochle cards with her friends, planting black-eyed Susans in her gardens, and baking pumpkin bread to give to her family and friends. She loved browsing antique shops and harmonizing to her favorite songs. But her biggest joy was regaling listeners with her colorful stories about her upbringing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arch, in 1982; parents; siblings Juanita Watkins, Orville Edmon and DeWitt Edmon, Jr.; and son-in-law James McCracken.

The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 16, at the Vandalia United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at 11:00, with Reverend Michael Malcosky officiating. Interment will proceed immediately afterward at The Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the church.

For those who wish, contributions may be made in Doris’ memory to the Vandalia United Methodist Church, 200 S. Dixie Drive, Vandalia, OH 45377.
