SMITH, Dr. James T., age 71 of Vandalia, passed away Saturday, October 15, 2011 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born October 25, 1939 in Columbus, OH, son of the late J. Vincent & Lucille M. (Schaub) Smith. Jim was a longtime resident and devoted member of the Vandalia community. He proudly served his community as a physician with the Vandalia Medical Center and always considered his patients as family. He loved his practice and the people he had the privilege to care for over the years. He was also an avid supporter of Butler Athletics and this town was truly his life. Jim is survived by his wife of 49 years, Gail (Stickel); 4 children, Amy Nemeth (Mike), Andy Smith (Paula), Leslie Budding (Bryan) and Laura Tobias (Nolan); 8 grandchildren, Ellie, Lydia, Michelle, Zachary, Emilee, Jake, Meredith, & Hannah; 2 brothers, Jay V. Smith (Barbara) and Joseph W. Smith (Mary Ann) 2 brothers-in-law, Jim (Margie) Stickel, John (Peggy) Stickel, and 1 sister-in-law, Connie (Dick) Korber, along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and good friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, October 19 at Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church with Fr. Joshua Otusafo officiating. Private burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia on Tuesday evening from 4-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton or to the Butler Athletic Boosters in Jims memory.
