Dr. Kenneth Welty Sr.

WELTY, Dr. Kenneth Sr., age 91, of Dayton, passed away peacefully at his residence, Monday, June 22, 2009. Dr. Welty was born and raised in Lima, Ohio at the Lima Rescue Mission by his parents, David Adam & Emma Welty, who founded the mission. He was a 1935 graduate of Lima Central High School, attended Bluffton College for 2 years and then transferred to The Ohio State University, where he graduated in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He then attended St. Louis Medical School and graduated with his M.D. in 1945. Dr. Welty returned to the Dayton area where he served his internship at Miami Valley Hospital from 1945-1946, where he met his wife, Eileen (Aydelott) and the couple married on March 30, 1946. He served in the United States Army, stationed in Battle Creek, MI, and following his honorable discharge in 1948, Dr. Welty moved to Vandalia, where he started the Vandalia Medical Center located at Scott & Perry Avenue. In 1965, he decided to return to The Ohio State University for a residency in child psychiatry. In 1971, he helped establish the Good Samaritan Mental Health Center at Good Samaritan Hospital, and in 1979, joined Fidelity Psychiatrists Group. In 1997, he went into private practice and after a long and fulfilling career, Dr. Welty retired in 2000. Dr. Welty was the recipient of the prestigious 50 Years in Medicine Award, was the 1962 Vandalia Man of the Year, was a charter member of the Vandalia Rotary Club in 1958 and served as club president. He also served on the Vandalia-Butler School Board from 1959-1964. He enjoyed serving as the team physician for both Butler & Northridge High Schools, was an active member of the Dayton Shrine and the Vandalia Lodge #742 F&AM, was a member of the American Psychiatric Society, the OSU Alumni Society and was proud of his fraternity, Delta Tau Delta. Dr. Welty was an avid lifetime fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cincinnati Bengals. Preceded in death by his wife, Eileen in 1998, and 1 daughter, Linda, Dr. Welty is survived by his children, Dr. Kenneth A. Welty Jr. & wife, Martha of Kettering, and Jean Ann & husband, John Baker of Butler Twp., 8 grandchildren, Kimberly, Lindsey, Jamie, Julie, David, Jacquie, Laura, & Jessica; 5 great-grandchildren, Ian, Connor, Olivia, Elizabeth & Sean and numerous other relatives and friends. A Memorial Service for family and friends will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, June 27 at the Vandalia United Methodist Church, 200 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia with Rev. Michael Pratt officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 am until time of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Miami Valley Hospital Health Foundation, 31 Wyoming St., Dayton, OH 45409 or Shriners Childrens Hospitals in Dr. Weltys memory.
