Edward J. Kovacs

Age 85, of Vandalia, Ohio passed away February 19, 2017 at The Hospice of Dayton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Mary Kovacs; and by his first wife of 39 years, Marilyn (Benbow) Kovacs. He is survived by his wife of the past 19 years, Jean (Bowen) Harman; daughter, Lynn Hayes; son Michael Kovacs; grandchildren, Ashley, Justin and Trevor Kovacs, Cameron and Caitlin Hayes; stepsons, Kevin, Scott and Michael Harman; eight step-grandchildren, Kelly, Christina, James, Jackie, A.J., Sara, Lauren & Michaela; and by five step great grandchildren. Ed graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1949, he proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and had a long, fulfilling career in the Avionics Lab at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He was a member of the Vandalia Masonic Lodge # 742 F&AM, the Scottish Rite, Valley of Dayton, and the Antioch Shrine. Ed was active at the First Lutheran Church in Dayton. Along with his wife, Jean, he enjoyed years of volunteering at Miami Valley Hospital and the Historical Society of Vandalia-Butler. Ed was a lifelong avid golfer and he enjoyed 26 years working and playing at Cassel Hills Golf course. A Celebration of Ed’s life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, February 25, at Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia. The family will be receiving friends from 2:00 p.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Ed should be made to either SICSA (in honor of his cat, Kiki), the Historical Society of Vandalia-Butler or Hospice of Dayton.
