Edward W. Vecchio Sr.

April 13, 1927 — September 19, 2013

VECCHIO, Edward W. Sr., age 86 passed away at his residence Sept 19, 2013 after a lengthy illness. He was born April 13, 1927. He was preceded in death by his parents Angeline and Charles Jacobs and his brother John Portash. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Josephine, his son Edward Vecchio Jr. (Penny), and daughter Diane Pierron (Dan). Four grandchildren: Daniel Pierron (Stephanie), Andrea Pierron, Christie Meserve (Matt), and Tracie Schenck (Ben), and 9 great-grandchildren, and also his cousin and dearest friend Richard Phillips. Ed was a proud World War II veteran who served in the Merchant Marine and was awarded medals for having served in two different war zones. In 1959 he and three other fathers co-founded the Pony League baseball league in the newly developed suburb of Huber Heights from which all organized baseball in that community has since grown. Ed spent his career in the industrial abrasive product business and was the co-founder of Abrasive Fabricating Company from which he eventually retired. He was a member of St. Adalbert Church and a lifelong member of the Polish American Club. Ed was one of the most generous and compassionate persons you could have ever known and will be remembered by his friends for absolute honesty and loyalty and by his family for his unconditional love and support. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, September 24 at St. Adalbert Catholic Church, 1511 Valley St., Dayton with Fr. Eric Bowman officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia on Monday evening from 5-7 pm.
