Eugene Shanahan

SHANAHAN, Eugene T. Gene age 89 of Vandalia, passed away Wednesday May 21, 2008 at the Widows Home after a lengthy illness. He was born November 12, 1918 in Springfield, son of the late William & Nancy (Bowers) Shanahan. Gene was a retired employee of Duriron Corp and was a U.S. Marine Corp Veteran of WWII. He was a member of St Christopher Catholic Church, Past President of American Legion Post #668, and was a former member and Past President of the Vandalia Lions Club. Gene was honored by the City of Vandalia as the Citizen of the Year and was an avid private pilot. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary (Kay) Shanahan in 1995. Gene is survived by 2 daughters Carol & husband Arthur Bryant of Fishers, IN and Kateri Terry & husband James McKee of Ashland, KY; one sister Teresa Orlemann of Cincinnati; 3 grandchildren Lynn Still, Janice Gravelle, and Michael Bryant; 10 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday May 24 at St. Christopher Catholic Church, Vandalia with Fr. Francis Keferl officiating. Burial Forest Hills Cemetery. If so desired, contributions may be made to St Christopher Church School or to the Widows Home of Dayton in Genes memory. Arrangements in care of Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home.
