Evelyn E. Conter Age 88, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2015. She was born September 13, 1926, the oldest of 11 children to Cornelius & Henrietta Kempf. She was also a great granddaughter of Henry Schnell, the founder of Schnellville, Indiana the town where she grew up and loved so much. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Conter, in 1967 after 19 years of marriage; her second husband of 10 years, Harold Hastell; son, Chris in 2005; brothers, Cornelius Kempf Jr., Richard, Robert & Earl Kempf; and sister, Janie Kempf (Altman). At the age of 19 she joined the U. S. Cadet Nurse Corps taking her training in Louisville, Ky., the same hospital in which she was born. For her last six months of training she was sent to the Dayton VA Hospital where she met and married John Conter in 1948. She loved being a homemaker, Cub Scout Den mother, doing all crafts popular at the time, spending many hours watching her sons play sports and her husband coaching them. In 1968 she returned to work going to the Vandalia Medical Center. After 10 years she returned to the Dayton VA Hospital and retired from there in 1988. In 1999 Evelyn married Harold Hastell who passed away in 2010. They enjoyed attending Navy and Family reunions. Evelyn and her family were founding members of St. Christopher Church. Evelyn was also active with the Vandalia Senior Citizens, Sister Cities, and Garden Clubs for over 50 years, presently Grow and Show. She loved to travel and visited over 40 countries, the most memorable being Fatima, Portugal, African Safaris and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Evelyn is survived by her sons, David (Peggy), Jack (Cheryl) & Rick Conter; grandchildren, Michael (Emily), Steven, Brian, Claire & Nolan; great grandsons, Davis & Ryan; brothers, Dennis (Bettie) Kempf, Harold (Joyce) Kempf & Tom (Mary Ann) Kempf; sisters, Betty (Tom) Boeglin, Nancy Herzog & sister-in-law, Carol Kempf; and by Harold's family, Cyndi (Don) Shaw, Bruce (Diane), David & Diane Hastell. The family will be receiving friends from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., Monday (1/5) at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday (1/6) at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 435 W. National Rd., Vandalia. Rev. Fr. Frank Keferl will officiate. Entombment will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dayton Foundation, Chris Conter Scholarship Fund, Vandalia Butler High School, 500 Kettering Tower, Dayton, Ohio 45423.
