Gary Lee Spoltman, born June 23, 1939 in Celina, Ohio, passed away peacefully after a short illness in his home surrounded by family on January 19th, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Mary Ann (Rentz) Spoltman, and his older brother, Ronnie. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Cecilia (Budde) Spoltman, four cherished children, Mark (Dawn), Mike (Sandy), Steve, and Linda (Ben), along with his grandchildren, Eric (Kayla), Patrick (Lauren), Max (Emma), Jarret, Jane (Michael), Libbey, Jack (Mariana), Julia, and Jake (Maddie), and one great granddaughter, Sophie (Patrick and Lauren).

He was the Operations Manager at NCR for 18 years, builder and President of Spoltman Construction, and enjoyed driving for Beau Townsend Ford in his later years.

Gary devoted his time to many service organizations. He was an active member of St. Christopher Parish for 60 years, including being one of the founding members of the Knights of Columbus at the parish. He served in the Lions Club of Vandalia for 43 years. He sponsored local youth sports teams and scout dens. He also was an active member of the Vandalia-Butler Chamber of Commerce, Sister Cities of Vandalia, and the Butler Township Board of Zoning Appeals. He was the Director of the Air Show Parade in Vandalia for several years. He was Butler Township Citizen of the Year for Outstanding Community Service in both 2001 and 2002. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for Many Outstanding Contributions over the years to the community by the Presidents Club of Vandalia-Butler in 2007 and 2008.

Gary was a loving and devoted grandpa, attending many of the grandkid’s activities including soccer games, football games, dance competitions, and 4-H horse shows. He loved boating with family at Grand Lake St. Mary’s, and the decades long tradition of the family lake vacation to Tennessee. He was a fan of Dayton Flyers basketball and Dayton Dragons baseball, and enjoyed driving his 1939 Farmall H and going to Fricker’s for wings and beer with his friends. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, friends, and community.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 26th, 2024, at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 435 E National Rd, Vandalia, OH 45377, with Fr. John Tonkin presiding. The family will receive friends Thursday, January 25th, 2024, at Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Drive, Vandalia, Ohio 45377, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., and Friday, January 26th from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at St. Christopher Church. Graveside service will be held at Precious Blood Cemetery in Chickasaw, Ohio, on Saturday, January 27th, 2024, at 11:00am, with Fr. John Tonkin celebrating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Gary’s name to the Vandalia Lions Club, PO BOX 444, Vandalia, Ohio 45377.
