ANDERS, Harry Niles, Jr., age 75, of Vandalia, passed away Friday, July 3, 2015 at Saint Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He was born August 15, 1939 in Dayton, OH, son of the late Harry Niles, Sr., & Mary E. Martin (Fowler). Preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Virginia M. Anders (Murphy), sister Donna B. Gilliland (Anders) and brother, Michael F. Anders. Niles served in the United States Navy as a Machinists Mate from February 1957 to June 1960. Upon his discharge, he then worked at Wright Patterson AFB from 1960 to 1980 as a Boiler Technician, Steam Pipe Fitter and an AFL/CIO Union Representative. His passion was fighting for veterans benefits and quality of healthcare issues. He was a Life Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #9582 where he was an All-American Post Commander, District 3 Commander, and also held various other local and state offices. He also was a Life Member of American Veterans (AMVETS) Post #99; American Legion Post #668; 40 & 8 Montgomery County Locale #34, Huber Heights; Moose Lodge #2464, New Carlisle, Dayton Masonic Lodge #147 and Antioch Shriners, Dayton. Niles was also a staunch Ohio State Buckeye Football and Basketball Fan. Niles is survived by his son Harry N. Anders III (Andy), wife Virginia (Salmon), of Virginia Beach, VA, and daughter, Vicki L. Roberts, husband William, of Catonsville, MD; three grandchildren, Jessica L. Anders, William K. Roberts and Alexis S. Roberts; brother Charles E. Anders, wife Sue, of Vandalia; sister Linda K. Hellman (Anders) of Englewood; sister Mary Lee Roder (Martin), husband James, of Englewood; brother Morris L. Martin (Butch) of Vandalia; sister Rebecca L. White (Martin), husband Charles, of Vandalia; aunt, Nellie Sullivan (Fowler) of Dayton and aunt Sally Flory (Fowler) of Midway; and his beloved dog, Molly. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, July 11, 2015, at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia. Burial to follow at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Wounded Warrior Project in Niles' memory.
