Iris Ruby McGuffin

Iris Ruby McGuffin (nee Nash), age 88, passed away 9 December 2017 at Cottingham Retirement Community, Cincinnati OH. Born 14 February 1929 in Lewis County, KY to Arthur Harrison Nash and Flora (nee Strode). She was raised by her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and George Turner, in Fleming County, KY. She graduated from Fleming County HS 1949. She attended Mayo Clinic School of Nursing in Rochester, MN 1949 - 1951 and became a registered nurse. She married Roy Elmer McGuffin 18 December 1954. Iris and Roy set up housekeeping in Portsmouth, OH. She was widowed early in life and never remarried. She raised two children on her own, and through her financial sacrifice, her children graduated from college with honors. She was a strong woman who insisted that her children be independent and self-supporting. Iris worked at Mercy Hospital in Portsmouth from 1954 - 1958. She and Roy moved to Vandalia, OH in 1958, where she lived for 56 years. She worked as a registered nurse at Stouder Hospital in Troy, OH, Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, OH, Franklin Nursing Center in Vandalia, OH, Grace Brethren Village in Englewood, OH, and as Director of Nursing at Washington Manor North in Dayton OH. Iris is preceded in death by her mother Flora (nee Strode), father Arthur Harrison Nash, uncle George Turner, aunt Elizabeth Turner (nee Strode), sisters Myrtle Mae, and Dorothy Elizabeth, brothers Frank Pettus, Herbert Harrison, Howard Douglas, and husband Roy E. McGuffin. She is survived by her sisters Fanny Elner Arrasmith (nee Nash), Mary Evelyn Arrasmith (nee Nash), daughter Lois A. Varvares (nee McGuffin/Kiproff), son Roy E. McGuffin, grandchildren Christopher M. Kiproff, George W. Kiproff (Kristen, nee Cochran), step-grandchildren Lesley Woenker (nee Varvares) (Donald), Nicholas Varvares (Sharon, nee Aguilar), great-grandchild Naomi Woenker, and many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed ceramics, sewing, rock collecting, travel, and working in her yard. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 AM at Morton and Whetstone 139 South Dixie Dr. Vandalia,, OH on Saturday, 16 December 2017. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am with Rev. Fr. John Tonkin officiating. Interment will follow at Dayton Memorial Park, 8135 North Dixie Drive, Dayton, OH. Memorials may be made to the U.S. Treasury National WWII Memorial Trust Fund or alz.org
