GASKILL, James E. Sr., age 78. On January 10, 2017, Jim passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife, Katherine “JoAnn” by his side. He was born in San Francisco, California on May 31st. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbur, mother, Catherine, and brother, Duane. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Katherine “JoAnn”, sons: Jim Gaskill, Jr., Rick Gaskill, Scott Gaskill, Ron Gaskill, Mike (Janet) Carpenter, Gary Carpenter, Randy (Kim) Carpenter, Brian Carpenter, and Jim (Becky) Gaskill; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Ron (Linda) Waldron and sister, Sandy (Ron) Goff and a host of other relatives and friends.
Jim traveled the United States working as a Sr. Piping Designer before making a permanent home in Dayton. He worked at AMG, Inc. for many years before his retirement. He was an active member at Fellowship Baptist Church in Vandalia. Jim loved to draw cartoons and drew a comic strip in high school which was published in the Dayton Daily News during a contest. Those who knew him, knew that his “king” cartoon character could be drawn in the blink of an eye.
He was venturous in his cooking when he was younger, and as he got older, he loved to try various meats. It was nothing to hear him talk about a new meat he tried: rattlesnake, deer, buffalo, and kangaroo just to name a few.
His love of books, mainly murder mysteries, was something he continued for as long as he could. He enjoyed action packed movies and his football. You could always come and watch a game with him on the weekend as long as you didn’t mind watching multiple games at once.
Jim and JoAnn loved to travel. They took the boys on many of car trips and lived in 8 states before calling Dayton, Ohio home. Several states they lived in twice. He always called Dayton home, as that is where his Dad lived. Once they retired, they traveled to California, Arizona, Iowa, North Carolina, Virginia, Nebraska and West Virginia to visit family and of course the occasional casino.
Graveside services will be held Friday January 13 at 1:00pm at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Dennis Phillips officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Miami Valley Foundation 46 N. Detroit St. Suite B Xenia, OH 45385 in James’ memory.
Please leave the family some of your favorite memories of Jim in the guestbook.
