Jean Ann Wagner, Age 90, of Vandalia, passed away March 7, 2024 at Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton. Jean was born May 24, 1933 in Dayton, Ohio to the late Roscoe A. and Julia A. (Nelson) Burger. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, John Burger, in 1986, and her beloved husband of 59 years, James G. Wagner, in 2015. In 1955 Jean received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work from Bowling Green State University. It was there that she met her future husband Jim, a returning Korean War veteran. After marriage and the births of their children, Jean pursued a teaching credential and embarked on a 25-year career at Demmitt Elementary School in Vandalia, primarily teaching first grade. Mid-career, in 1977, she went on to be awarded a Master of Education degree from Wright State University. Jean was a proud member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority during her college years, and of Sigma Phi Gamma International Sorority thereafter. Jean was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church where she and Jim sang in the church choir for many years. She was active with Vandalia Sister Cities and Friends of Aullwood. Jean is survived by her three sons and their spouses, David and Margaret, Steven and Kayla and Timothy and Janelle; by her six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and by her extended family and many good friends. The family will be receiving guests on Saturday, April 13 for a visitation from 11 a.m. to noon at St. Christopher Church, 435 East National Road, Vandalia. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow, to be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Fr. Andrew Smith officiating. Interment will take place immediately after the funeral at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery. Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Jean to either St. Christopher Church or Vandalia Sister Cities.
