John D. Clay Sr.

February 14, 1927 — November 29, 2011

CLAY, John D. Sr., born February 14, 1927, passed away November 29, 2011 at home. He was born in Keokee, Virginia to James and Melinda (Legg) Clay. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Ed, Tom, Hubert and Roy and sisters, Beulah Bush, Lorene Bush, Edith Clay and Louise Nelson. John also lost his daughter, Lisa Louise in 1986 and son, John Jr. in 2010. John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy Lane Clay, his daughter, Christy Amlin & husband, David; grandchildren, Andrew & Erin, Emily, CJ, Marcus and Gary; great-grandchildren, Kaley, Chloe, Elly, Henry and soon to be born, Lucy Mae and many nieces and nephews. John was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving on the USS Franklin from 1944-46. He retired from Chrysler Airtemp/General Dynamics in 1986. He served many years at the Trinity Methodist Church and Boy Scouts of America. John enjoyed spending winters in Naples, Florida, taking over his kids school projects, growing heirloom tomatoes from his saved seeds and never calling a repairman. Visitation will be held Friday, December 2, from 5-7 pm at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia with funeral services to be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, December 3. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests support to the American Heart Association or Hospice of Dayton.
