SHIVELHOOD, John James , Jim age 94, of Vandalia, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Hearth & Home of Vandalia. He was born in Shamokin, PA on January 15, 1918 to Wm. George and Helen Shivelhood. After graduating from the Girard College for Boys in Philadelphia, PA in 1935, Jim worked briefly at Philco Radio and TV, and then on the Reading Railroad until 1942 when he was drafted into the Army Air Corp. After Basic Training, Jim was selected for Officer Candidate School and served in World War II as a Captain until 1946. While working at the Fair Store in Cincinnati, OH, he met and later married his wife, Reva (Mayhugh) in Bradenton, FL in 1948. They welcomed their daughter Donna Lynne in 1949. Jim returned to the Air Force as an active duty reservist in 1951. He was stationed at Patrick AFB, FL, Okinawa, Japan, the Pentagon, and finally Wright-Patterson AFB where he retired as a Lt. From 1967-1988 Jim was in the Air Force Civil Service at Wright-Patt assigned to the Aeronautical Systems Division where he managed the acquisition of various weapon systems including the B -58 Hustler Bomber, Special Operations Forces Gunship, and several trainers for the Air Force Academy. After retirement, he enjoyed some travel with his wife and family, gardening, and regularly meeting with friends and family. He also enjoyed helping his daughter and granddaughter, Amanda with all sorts of activities; and, after Amandas marriage to Joshua Woodruff in 2004, was exceptionally pleased to welcome his great-grandson, Owen into the world in 2008. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, January 8 at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia. Entombment will follow at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11:00 am until time of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton in Jims memory.
