GABBARD, Joseph “Britt”, age 57 of Vandalia, passed away October 12, 2021 after a brave battle with ALS. Britt was born May 24, 1964 in Dayton, Ohio, son of Charles and Karen (Myers) Gabbard. He was a 1982 graduate of Vandalia-Butler High School, served his country in the U.S. Army from 1984-1988. Britt was part of the 3rd Ranger Battalion, 2nd Ranger Training Company, Ranger School, Airborne Ranger school and Jungle Training School.
Following his military service, Britt attended Louisiana Tech University to become a pilot. He worked for Atlantic Coast Airlines, Independence Air, Compass, and ultimately finished his flying career with Delta Airlines. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan, loved to cook, and took great pride in caring for his yard.
Preceded in death by his father, Charles and one brother, Todd, Britt is survived by his wife of 18 years, Linda Gabbard; his mother, Karen Myers (Ron); one son, Jake; three step-sons, Lee, Adam and Zach; and 3 grandsons, Louden, Luke and Drew; and his beloved dog, Summer, along with extended family and good friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 7, 2022 at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 435 E. National Rd., Vandalia with Fr. Andrew Smith officiating.
Following the service, the family will be hosting a Celebration of Britt’s life at the American Legion Post #668, 8220 N. Dixie Dr., Dayton, from 4-8 pm. Please wear your Ohio State garb to honor Britt and his love of the Buckeyes. Britt was a brave warrior in his battle with ALS. Please consider a donation in his honor to I AM ALS. Donation information will be available at the celebration. Also, the American Legion has graciously agreed to match all sales made at the event and to donate the funds to I AM ALS in Britt’s honor.
