SERVICES RESCHEDULED
VISITATION THURSDAY JULY 28 4-7pm
FUNERAL FRIDAY JULY 29 10:00am
PIZZINO, Joseph R. “Joe” age 84, of Butler Twp. went to be with Jesus, Monday, July 18, 2022, after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Joe is reunited in Heaven with his mother Clara, his father Joseph, and his brother Terry. Joe was born January 5, 1938 in Port Washington, Wisconsin and grew up in Milwaukee. He joined the U.S. Army in 1956, serving until 1959. Joe moved to Dayton in 1961 where he began a life of public service. Joe took a job with Duriron/FloServe where he worked for over 35 years, ending his career as the senior buyer for the foundry division.
Joe’s passion for people started young – his dream as a young boy was to become a firefighter and in 1962, he was encouraged to join the Madison Township Fire Department where he proudly served for 11 years. Joe moved to Dayton, and once again was encouraged to join a new fire family, The Butler Township Fire Department. Joe joined the department in 1973, earning his paramedic certification in 1976. He earned several awards throughout his career including EMS Person of the Year and Montgomery County Firefighter of the Year. He served in roles of Battalion Chief and ultimately Assistant Chief. Joe’s level of dedication to the fire service and his community throughout his 33 year career was unmatched and remains an example for the young fire professionals that have followed him.
There is only one thing that exceeded Joe’s love of public service, and that is simply the love for his family. Joe’s family was his treasure, including his loving and devoted wife of 38 years Paula; children Amy Pizzino Miller (Daniel), Beth Pizzino Perkins (James), Angela Finnegan (Gregg), Paul Sherer; grandsons Matthew Joseph, Cody Wayne, Jacob Robert, Joseph James, Zachary Tanner, Chase Falon and great-grandsons Bowen, Nolan, and Bryce; brothers Larry and Tim and many nieces and nephews. The proud Sicilian legacy Joe leaves his family, along with love he showed is one that will be passed on for years to come.
Funeral services honoring Joe’s life will be held for family and friends Friday, July 29, 2022 at 10:00am at the Vandalia United Methodist Church, 200 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia with Mr. Charles Wiltrout officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Polk Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia on Thursday evening from 4-7pm. If so desired, contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, 1661 Nicholas Rd. Dayton, OH 45417, Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave, Dayton OH 45420, or to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105 in Joes memory.
