WHALEY, Kanani R. “Pineapple” age 73 of Vandalia, passed away Wednesday March 9, 2016 at Hospice of Dayton. He was born September 27, 1942 in Topeka, KS, son of the late William & Fusayo (Shinagawa) Whaley. Kanani was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and was a retired foreman from General Motors Moraine with 30 years of service. He attended the Vandalia United Methodist Church and his hobbies included playing golf, baseball and coin collecting. Kanani was preceded in death by one sister and one half brother. He is survived by his wife of 12 years Lynn Whaley; one son Kanani “Chopper” Whaley Jr. and wife Angie; 2 daughters Angie & husband Doug Whiteman and Daphene & husband Mike Augius; step-son Richard Byrd and step-daughter Tricia Byrd; brother Nui Whaley; sister Mapuana Evjen; 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday March 12 at 12:00 noon at the Vandalia United Methodist Church 200 S. Dixie Dr. Vandalia with Rev. Mike Malcosky officiating. Burial will follow at Poplar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday morning from 11:00am until time of the service at noon. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the VUMC Sunday school and youth ministries in Kanani’s memory. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.mortonwhetstonefh.com
