SCHMIDT, Leo W. age 88 of Vandalia, passed away Monday February 5, 2007 at Hospice of Dayton after a lengthy illness. He was born May 15, 1918 in Yorkshire, OH son of the late John & Elizabeth (Sturwold) Schmidt. On June 18, 1946, Leo married Marie Mescher at St. Johns Church in Maria Stein. Leo is survived by his wife of 60 years Marie (Mescher) Schmidt; sons Robert & wife Marge of Tipp City, Ron and Virgil both of Vandalia, Mike & wife Cheral of Pearland, TX; daughters Patricia and Susan, Barbara & husband John Ross; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; a brother Ray & wife Viola Schmidt of Yorkshire; 2 sisters Henrietta & husband Sam Doseck of Ft Loramie and Adella Henke of Versailles. He was preceded in death by his brother Lawrence and sister-in-law Ruth as well as brothers-in-law August Schlater, Julius Henke, and Louis Borchers. Leo was a member of St Christopher Catholic Church in Vandalia for 45 years. He was an active neighborhood watch coordinator and was a substitute teacher at MCJVS in the machine trades. He served in WWII in the Army Air Corp 18th Repair Squadron from 1942 to 1945. He was a retired employee of Frigidaire (GM) where he worked for 35 years and retired in 1980. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Christopher Catholic Church on Friday February 9 at 11:00am with Fr. Robert Monnin officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery. Friends may call at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home 139 S. Dixie Dr. Vandalia on Thursday evening from 4 to 8pm. If so desired, contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton in Leos memory.
