Marie Helm Storment passed away on January 31, 2016, at Brookville, Ohio. Marie was born on February 2, 1920, in Alma, Illinois, the daughter of Harry and Bessie Manion Helm. She graduated from Salem High School, and after going to Normal School, she began teaching in rural one room schools in Illinois. Later she graduated from the University of Dayton.
Marie and Albert Storment were married on Mother’s Day, May 8, 1942. During the war years Marie and Albert lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where their son, Richard was born. When Albert took a job flying for Mead Paper the family moved to Vandalia, Ohio, in 1948. After Albert died in a plane accident in 1968, Marie, who had taught at Vandalia Elementary School, continued teaching second grade at both Murlin Heights and Demmitt Elementary Schools. She retired from teaching in 1980.
Marie enjoyed sewing throughout her life, sewing not only for family and herself, but for friends as well. She also enjoyed traveling and the monthly gathering of retired teachers. In addition she had a collection of ceramic birds. A real joy for Marie was to read about some of her students in the paper as they grew to be participants in the wider community.
During the past year and a half most of Marie’s grandchildren, and some of her great-grandchildren, were able to come to Ohio to visit with her. She is survived by her son Richard (Sandy) Storment of Scappoose, Oregon; grandchildren Shawn Storment of Salem, Oregon, and Ryan (Jen) Storment of Belgrade, Montana; step grandchildren ‘Chelle (Micheal) Lanz of Clackamas, Oregon, and Erik (Bobby) Peterson of Albany, Oregon; great-grandchildren Keeley Storment, Adrianne Storment, Ashlinn Storment, Autumn Meschke, Austin Allen, Devin Peterson, Cody Peterson; nieces Marion Racey and Marilyn Banks. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister Verniece McBride.
Graveside services will be on Thursday, February 4, at Dayton Memorial Park at 10:00 am. Memorials are suggested to United Theological Seminary, 4501 Denlinger Rd, Dayton, OH 45426, or charity of your choice.
