SMITH, Marlin B., age 75, of Vandalia, passed away Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Miami Valley Hospital. He was born April 1, 1934 in Dayton, OH, son of the late Howard & Fern (Furl) Smith. Marlin was a US Navy Veteran and a Seabee, and was a truck driver with Carolina Freight Carrier Corp. He was a member of the Vandalia United Methodist Church, volunteered at Miami Valley Hospital and at WPAFB Hospital. Marlin was a Charter Member of the Vandalia Fire Department and proudly served as a volunteer fireman with both Vandalia & Butler Township Fire Departments. Marlin is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara; 1 son, Larry Smith of Kettering; 1 daughter, Christina & husband, Rick Zink of Vandalia; 5 grandchildren, Emily, Allison & Julie Zink and Courtney & Hannah Smith; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, December 3, at the Vandalia United Methodist Church, 200 S. Dixie Dr. Vandalia with Rev. Thomas Weeks officiating. Burial to follow at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia on Wednesday evening from 4-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Vandalia Butler Food Pantry or the VUMC Memorial Fund in Marlins memory. The family would like to offer special thanks to Dr. Crespo & Dr. Williams and the staff at Miami Valley Hospital for the compassionate care provided to Marlin throughout his illness.
