Mary Frances “Fran" Gillespie
Age 93, of Vandalia, passed away Sunday, May 16, 2021, at The Lantern of Madison. Fran was born June 5, 1927, in Quinlan Texas to William Thomas O’Hara and Mary Elizabeth Ramsey O’Hara. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 72 years, Charles "Chuck" Gillespie, mother, father, brother Herman, and sisters Bert, Willie, Bessie, Inez, Mildred, Margaret, and Barbara.
One guiding principle of life Fran endlessly modeled was the importance of caring for her family and friends. Fran worked as a secretary in the Vandalia Butler HS principal’s office in the late 50s and at Vandalia Medical Center as a receptionist for more than 30 years. She was always so proud to have received an award from the Amateur Trapshooting Association for more than 50 years of service.
Fran is survived by her children, Don and wife Vicki, Steve and wife Pascale, Debbie and husband Joe Andrews, John and husband Ron Welch, eight grandchildren, Peter Gillespie, Shannon Gillespie, Aimee Hayes, Kelley Gillespie, Alyson Schreiber, Patrick Gillespie, Hannah Andrews, Grace Andrews and six great grandchildren and sister Marty Darnell who is the last surviving sibling.
The family will be receiving friends at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia on Tuesday May 25 from 11:00 until time of service at 1:00 pm. Pastor Mike Malcosky will officiate. Interment will follow at Polk Grove Cemetery. The family asks that all guests wear masks and practice social distancing due to the pandemic.
