MATHIS, Norman age 83 of Vandalia, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2017. He was born April 4, 1934 in Pikeville, TN, son of the late George Dewey & Elsie Brown Mathis. Norman was a retired employee of General Motors – Inland Division, a member of the Vandalia Masonic Lodge #742 F&AM, and an avid Cincinnati Reds fan. Preceded in death by his son, Russell Mathis Sr., his siblings, Stanley, Lucinda, Ruth, Frances & Evelyn, along with his former wife, Betty. Norman is survived by his wife, Doris; 6 children, Debra Haney, Rodney Mathis, April Scott, Tim Salyer (Cathy), Norman Mathis (Beth) and Gail Obringer (John); 2 brothers, Carlos & Ross Mathis; 1 sister, Marie Singleton; step-children, Deborah Chaney (Larry), Dori Giese, Terri Mabry (Scott) & Cathy Schweigman (Bernard); 21 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, June 19 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 7700 Dog Leg Rd., Dayton, with Pastor Kurt Lammi officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia on Sunday from 2-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Crossroads Hospice in Norman’s memory.
