Rafael Umana

Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family December 31st, 2018 in Fishers Indiana. Prior to that he was married 53 years to his wife Patricia Umana (Deady) where they lived in Vandalia Ohio. Rafael was born September 27, 1927 in Bogota Colombia. He graduated from High School in Bogota. Rafael immigrated to the United States in the early 1950's and became a US citizen. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Dayton in Electrical Engineering and master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He worked over 30 years civil service at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in the Flight Dynamics Lab. He was involved in the community as volunteer over the years at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Miami Valley Hospital, various church activities at St. Christopher Church, Dayton Hispanic Catholic Ministries and was a member of American Legion for several years. He was preceded in death in by his wife Patricia (Pat) Umana. He is survived by his sister Josefina Alvarado, son Greg Umana (wife Kristy) with grandchildren Luke (Wife Hannah), Brittany, Erika and Andrew. Nephew Rafael Alvarado (Wife Guustie) with great nieces/nephews Raul (Wife Lauren), Alex (Wife Stephany) and Mariah. Visitation and church services will be held at St. Christopher Church Vandalia Ohio on Friday January 4th with visitation at 10am followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. Interment will follow at Poplar Hill Cemetery. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to Saint Christopher Catholic Church.
