Rettalou Guthrie

January 10, 1918 — June 18, 2015

Rettalou Guthrie Age 97, passed away after a severe stroke on May 22, 2015. She is survived by her husband of the past 71 years, H. Nelson Guthrie, Jr; two daughters, Jane A. Rahn and Joretta L. Jones (L. M. Sonny); two grandsons, Mitchell Nelson Jones (Nikki) and Nelson Rahn; and by her extended family & many good friends. She was born January 10, 1918 in Oakland City, IN to William Richey & Alta (Bryant) McCullough. Rettalou was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Bruce Rahn; sisters, Doris Winecoff, Bee Tooley; and by her brother, William R. McCullough. Rettalou was a graduate of Indiana University as a Registered Nurse. She went on to work in Chicago. At age 60 she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Central State University and worked as a school nurse for Vandalia-Butler Schools until retirement. She helped start a private kindergarten in Vandalia, was a Brownie leader, member of O.E.S. (Order of Eastern Star), Daughters of the American Revolution, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (Delta Kappa Chapter). A celebration of Rettalou's life will start at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia. At 5:00 p.m. Rev. Tom Weeks & Rev. James Guthrie will lead a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made in memory of Rettalou to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or Vandalia-Butler City Schools Athletic Department. .
