Richard L. "Dick" Miller

July 3, 1928 — April 21, 2015

MILLER, Richard L., age 86 of Vandalia, born July 3, 1928, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Hospice of Dayton from complications of Parkinson's disease. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou of 59 years and three daughters who were the love of his life, Kim (Scott) Griffith, Pam (Mike) Trick and Dana (Eric) Cluxton. He was affectionately known as "Dutch" by his seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Eric (Erin) Griffith and Abby and Will; Chris (Erin) Griffith and Lacie, Jeremy (Chakara) Trick, Mahalee, Adriel and Tyler; Jessica (Pat) Burke, Matt (Michelle) Cluxton and Harry, Finley and Paige; Amanda (Matt) Bachus and Andy Cluxton. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ethel Miller, brother, Fred (Betty) Miller and sister, Doris (Bill) O'Dell. He graduated from Verona High School and started working at Chrysler Airtemp of Dayton as an assistant Paymaster. He was drafted and served in the US Army in the Korean War, then returned to Chrysler where he retired in 1977. He and two friends started the small accounting firm of Brusman, Landversicht and Miller. He served the City of Vandalia as a Councilman from 1964-1965, Vice Mayor 1966-1967, Mayor 1968-1971 and Councilman again from 1976-1981. He was also active in the Kiwanis Club of Vandalia, serving as President in 1966. Dick loved to play golf and also worked at Cassel Hills Golf Course as a starter/ranger, and then switched to what he enjoyed most, mowing with the maintenance group. It brought back happy memories of growing up and living on the farm. A special thanks to Marty Szturm, golf course superintendent for his kindness and compassion for Dick in the last couple of years he worked. Dick truly loved working for him. Most of all, Dick loved his home and his family. He always told them how proud he was of them, and he truly meant it. We all loved him so very much and will miss him and his "Dutchisms" dearly. We know he is in a better place without discomfort and pain. Funeral services will be held for Dick at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 25 at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia with Pastor Michael Malcosky officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton in Dick's memory.
