Dick was an avid fisherman and would venture out rain or shine when he felt that the fish were biting; especially at his secret spot. He found almost as much enjoyment in re-telling his “fish tales” during family fish fries as he did in the actual fishing. Dick never met a stranger and would sit and talk to anyone that would listen to his seemingly endless collection of stories and adventures.
Dick’s love of sports began early in his youth and continued through high school where he played football and basketball. In adulthood, he could be found teaching his sons and grandchildren the ins and outs of whatever sport they were currently playing. He was an equal opportunity fan and followed NASCAR, the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Reds, Dayton Dragons and UD Basketball. Dick was the 1999 International Basketball Shoot-Out Champion in the 60 and Over division and caught state record-setting bass on more than one occasion.
The family will receive friends at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia on Thursday evening, July 6 from 5-8 pm. Funeral services will be private.
