Robert T. "Bob" Gottschall

September 9, 1958 — January 21, 2018

Gottschall, Robert T. (Bob) , age 59 peacefully passed Sunday Jan. 21, 2018. He was born on Sept 9, 1958 in Dayton. He is a 1976 graduate of Vandalia-Butler. Preceded in death by his mother Thelma White, his father Robert T. Gottschall Sr and his beloved fur-baby Topper. He is survived by his loving sister, Dusty Warner and husband Scott, brother George Edler and wife Jane McKenzie, niece Shannon Dixon and fiance’ Jeremy and nephews Matt Edler and wife Kristi & Wesley Freeman and wife Amber. Bob shares many cherished memories with life-long family friend Mike Moran.

Bob had a personality larger than life and never knew a stranger. Bob decided to become a DJ, which was perfect for his booming voice and his “life of the party” personality. “Stand-By Bob” as he was known on air at Z-93, became DJ Bob once he resided at Stonespring and Crossroads nursing facilities. His daily morning announcements were something he took great care in planning as he took pride in providing the residents with uplifting words of support. Additionally, Bob helped organize other events the facilities held from time to time. He always offered a smile and lifted the spirits of the residents.

Bob didn’t view his handicap as an obstacle; it was merely a challenge to overcome. He once quoted on one of his daily announcements “Challenges are what make life interesting but overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” Bob strived to live by these words daily.

Having a great passion for sports, a courtside seat at the Dayton Flyers basketball game was a favorite place for Bob. Watching a game with Bob was like sitting with Howard Cosell as he knew all the stats of every single player!

Being in a wheel chair did not stop Bob from living life to the fullest and helping others. When able, he attended Corpus Christi Church. Bob enjoyed giving the gift of hope to others. He was an active member of The Corpus Christi St. Vincent de Paul Conference. He also volunteered at The House of Bread and the Vandalia Food Pantry. Many close friendships were made throughout his years volunteering.

Bob had a special place in his heart for the Vandalia and Butler Township Fire Departments. Over the years, they helped him many times and strong friendships were developed. A familiar face at the National Night Out, Bob always offered his support.

Bob will be dearly missed in our family and community and he will forever remain in our hearts. As Bob used to say: “Remember to shake a hand, flash a smile, wish someone a good day, and most importantly show some love because love truly is a many splendor thing!”
