NICKEL, Ronald E. “Ron” age 66 of Vandalia, passed away unexpectedly on Friday October 28, 2016 at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was born May 13, 1950 in Dayton, son of the late Marjorie L. (Farney) and Bernard C. Nickel. Ron was a graduate of Vandalia Butler High School Class of 1968 and was a member of Cassel Hills Church of Christ. He was a retired Physical Education teacher from Huber Heights City Schools and was a longtime basketball coach in both the Huber Heights and Vandalia school districts. Ron served as commissioner for the Vandalia Parks & Rec youth baseball leagues. He loved playing golf in the men’s league at Cassel Hills golf course. Ron’s passion was coaching basketball and he shared his love for the sport with countless youth and adults in both communities. He had a great sense of humor and was quick witted which helped to inspire so many young athletes to reach their potential both on and off the court. Ron was truly a friend to many people. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years Sharon J. Nickel; daughter Kristine S. Imel; son Kevin C. Nickel; sister Suzanne (Greg) Allen; stepsons Mike (Melissa) Spirito, John Spirito, Harold (Allison) Cruea; grandchildren Nick Bayless, Brock Bayless, Hank Imel, Amelia Imel, Joey Spirito, Tiffany Spirito, Kaden Spirito, Sam Spirito, Sophie Spirito, Sydney Tucker, James Tucker, David Partridge, Emillie Partridge, Gunnar Cruea, Jaxon Cruea, Dylan Cruea, Lindsey Naughton; great-grandson Carter Naughton and numerous other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held Wednesday November 2, at 10:30am at the Cassel Hills Church of Christ 900 S. Brown School Rd. Vandalia with Mr. David Edmonds officiating. The family will receive friends at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home 139 S. Dixie Dr. Vandalia on Tuesday evening from 4pm to 8pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ron Nickel Scholarship Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
