Shirley Couch

The Couch Family wishes to share in their grief of Shirley Couch's death on the morning of August 19th, 2010. Although she will be so greatly missed, we equally rejoice in our knowledge of her new home with her Heavenly Father. Friends and community are welcome to a sharing and celebration of her life at the Morton-Whetstone Funeral Home 139 S. Dixie Dr, Vandalia, OH on August 29th between the hours of 1 to 4 pm. Born Shirley Ella Weikel, September 2, 1935 in Syrcacuse New York to Hervey S. Weikel and Isabel M. Weikel. Shirley's life motivation was her family and the community in which they lived. Her home was always open to anyone in need of shelter, friendship, a home cooked meal, and family love. Over her decades many were welcomed through her home. Her endless open arms to those who came for comfort and protection led many to know her as Mom Couch, Grandma, and Grandma Punkin. Shirley came to the Miami Valley in 1956 with her husband Harry,from Indiana. For decades she was a noted local historian and genealogist, President of the Vandalia Play School and Kindergarten as well as an active member of the community in too many organizations to mention. Most noted as a Founding Member of the Vandalia Butler Historical Society and the initiator of its Hootinger Center located on Alkaline Springs Rd. in Vandalia. She also was a long time volunteer of The Dayton Hospice. She has authored local history pieces on the Interurban Rail Systems, the Butler Township Subscription Schools, History of Butler Township,and others related to family history and genealogy. Shirley is survived by her husband of 55 years, Harry Couch, a daughter Lisa Chastain, Sons Dr. Mark Couch, David Couch, Maj. Jeff Couch (Ret), and Brad Couch along with 14 grand children, and 10 great grand children in addition to numerous, extended family, exchange students and many others who knew her as "Mom Couch".
