Suzanne Jane Waters Tolle of Dayton, Ohio died peacefully, April 18, 2020
at age 98.She was a member of the Greatest Generation, described herself
as Scotch-Irish and though a long time Ohio resident, still considered herself
a "Pennsylvania girl at heart."
Suzanne was born February 25th, 1922 in Pittsburgh, PA to parents,
Curtis Edward Waters and Leila Margaret Kirk Waters. Her siblings were
James Kirk Waters, Mary Redman Waters and Harriet Phillips Waters.
She was baptized in Carrick, PA and was a member of Westminster
Presbyterian Church in Dayton, OH for over 50 years. Suzanne was a
1939 Duquesne High School Graduate, attended Secretarial School and
was a Pittsburgh Steel Mill Supervisor. She served in the U.S. Navy
during WWII as a WAVE and was Honorably Discharged as a Specialist (T)
Third Class (Link Trainer of Navy Pilots). In 1944, she married
Robert Luther Sayre, a Mechanical Engineer and a First Lieutenant in the
U.S. Navy. In Washington, D.C., the couple welcomed daughter, Jane Louise
and later in Dayton, OH, a son, Peter Kirk. Suzanne's children remember her
as kind, and passionate about her home and her children's education. Suzanne
had strong organizational skills and excelled at Vandalia-Butler High School as
an Administrative Assistant. She volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital in
West Palm Beach, FL. and after returning to Dayton, worked at
Greene and Ladd and Cowen and Company a total of 20 years. Later in life,
Suzanne married a kind soul, William Melvin Tolle. They were married 31
years.
Suzanne enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting, bridge, gardening, cats,
shopping, genealogy and being with long time friends. She volunteered
at church to teach non-readers to read. She supported Aullwood, The
Dayton Art Institute, Historical Society of Vandalia-Butler, Clothes That
Work and Veterans Organizations. Suzanne participated in the 2011
Honor Flight.
Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents, brother, sister,
Mary Headrick and her husband, Bill. She is survived by Children,
Jane Sayre Logan (Husband, Garry), Peter Kirk Sayre (Wife, Trudy),
Sister, Harriet Waters Leister (Rochester, NY), Grandchildren,
Todd Goad (Wife, Heather), Jason Goad, Michael Sayre (Wife, Jocelyn),
Jonathan Sayre, Great Grandchildren, Michael E. Sayre, James A. Sayre, and
Nephews and Nieces in the East and West, also, close friends, Jan List and Marsha Tolle.
Morton and Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia, OH is assisting the
family. All are welcome to a Celebration of Life Service at 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2021 at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia. Suzanne will be laid to rest at
Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations
to the Alzheimer's Association, 31 W. Whipp Rd., Dayton, OH 45459 or
Historical Society of Vandalia-Butler, 336 E. Alkaline Springs Rd., Vandalia, OH
45377. The family would like to thank Elmcroft of Washington Township,
