William D Halstead

September 30, 1934 — January 16, 2008

HALSTEAD, William D., age 73, of Vandalia, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Miami Valley Hospital. He was born September 30, 1934 in Blue Point, NY, son of the late William & Grace Violet Halstead. William was retired from the United State Navy where he served in both the Vietnam and Korean Conflicts. He also worked at Walter Reid Army Hospital. William was a member of the American Legion Post #668, VFW Post #9582, and worked for the Vandalia Service Department. He was well known in his Vandalia neighborhood where he enjoyed gardening and his yard work. He was an all-around caring individual who helped many people. Preceded in death by his sister, Vivian Rizzuto and his beloved dog, Sam, William is survived by his wife of 18 years, Marjorie Ann; his children, Scott Halstead of CO, Laura Halstead of WI, Robert Halstead of CO, Jennifer Stewart (Stanley) of TN, James Miller & fianc, Susan Huntsberger of Troy, Michael Miller (Sharon) of Union and Jeffrey Miller (Lisa) of Vandalia; 9 grandchildren, Kristina Halstead, Austin Stewart, Hunter Stewart, Alisha Cagg, Lori Cordell, Michael Miller, Justin Miller, Nicholas Miller and Shannon Miller; 4 great-grandchildren, Madison Cagg, Rickey Cagg, Avery Cordell and Devyn Cordell; his mother-in-law, Grace E. Pearson of MD and brother-in-law, Raymond Pearson of MD; and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am, Monday, January 21, 2008 at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia with Pastor Steve Nichols officiating. Burial to follow at Dayton National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-4 pm. If so desired, contributions may be made to the Vandalia Rescue Squad in Williams memory.
