William R. Taylor

October 8, 1933 — March 17, 2016

TAYLOR, William Robert , 82, of Butler Township passed from this earthly life into the eternal peace of Heaven in communion with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and in reunion with his loved ones who have gone before, on March 17, 2016 at Dayspring Healthcare Center in Enon. Bill, born October 8, 1933 in Dayton, was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Arietta (Martin) Taylor, beloved wife of 48 years, Rose (Howell), son Walter Taylor, and step-son Vernon Howell. He is survived by daughter Pam (Nick) Yoder, Walter’s wife Cindy, step-son Elbert Howell, grand-sons Nick Taylor and Brad and Ryan Yoder, granddaughter Lauren (Jake) Livermore, step-granddaughters Melissa and Ashley Howell, sisters Marilyn (David) Ruffer and Marjorie (Ken) Davis, many nieces and nephews, and faithful dear friend Donna Patterson.

A Navy veteran of the Korean War, Bill was honored to be chosen to serve aboard and become a ‘plank owner’ of the new submarine hunter-killer Frigate, USS Willis A. Lee, DLF, where he was a fire-control Technician petty officer, working with radars, computers, and gun-directors.

In the early 1960’s he worked for Union Carbide Nuclear Co. in Oak Ridge, TN, where he was involved with the fabrication of nuclear weapons. Later, he was an instrument maker at the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies. While at Oak Ridge, Bill engaged part-time in designing house plans for local contractors, and in the fabrication of commercial nuclear instruments at American Nuclear Co.

After returning to Dayton he worked in the tooling/manufacturing industry, and for Dayton Reliable Tool Company as designer, CNC programmer, and CAD/CAM designer, from where he retired in 1993.

Bill’s hobbies and interests included gardening, hiking, photography, sailing, music composition, and vacationing in the mountains of Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. He was an avid model railroader and a former member of the B&O and Western Maryland Railway Historical Societies. A past member of American Mensa, he was a studious reader of science, history, geo-politics and economics, and Biblical studies, especially eschatology, and delighted in philosophical discussion with like-minded kindred spirits.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 23, at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Drive, Vandalia. Interment will follow with military honors at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends from 1:00 p.m. until time of service.
